  • Power steering is standard on nearly all cars and trucks sold today. It's a good idea, unless you have arms like a gorilla.
  • It is a misnomer! It is really "Power Assist Steering" as it uses some of the engines power to Mechanically Assist U to turn the car easily in the direction U want to go. Now days it is "Variable Ratio" so that at high speed U don't turn too fast (& roll it)& at slow speed it turns faster to get into that parking spot! John
  • Power steering is a hydraulically-assisted steering system that makes it easier for the driver to steer. Back when cars were bigger and weighed more, this could be a real asset. Even though today's cars are smaller and lighter, you will probably have to special order a new car to get one with manual steering.
  • It really depends on the vehicle. If you're talking about a 1 Ton GMC Sierra then you would need to be a strongman champion to manage without power steering on a daily basis. If you're talking about a smart car, it's really not required. In fact the smart car doesn't come with power steering on the lower model and yet it is easy to turn. If the vehicle has big tires and lots of weight on those tires, you are exerting force against all of that resistance. If the tires and vehicle are smaller and lighter, there is less resistance and less need. In the end though it's worth it just to get it. At the very least it helps your resale value...
  • It's standard these days.
  • It would depend on the car.I have owned about 10 cars without power steering and in those cars it was not needed. Most of them were sports cars or small compact cars from years ago.It is harder to find a car these days without power assisted steering.
