As a jewellery professional, I can suggest that you will do well in any formal situation with a classic looking watch (not a sports style). You'll do best to stick with a neutral face that is within the same colour group as the band. So, for a gold-banded watch, you want either a white,cream or gold face, and for a silver band, either grey,silver or black face. Hope this helps!
All "professional" settings are not the same. You need to know the dictates of your own setting and your own profession. I can't imagine answering this question correctly given how broad that spectrum can be.
