I think they need one. They could make so much money off of merchandise. And gain even more popularity at the same time. From a businesses point of view, they have to make that leap, just to see if its worth it or not. Its unlikely that it would become a loss to them...

why not just start your own cafe shop whatever. design your own logos. offer people the opportunity to put their avatars on tee shirts hats and handbags.
