This sounds like the common blend door failure on the Explorer. The blend door controls air flow through the heater core. It is on a vertical axis like a closet door and the motor control connection breaks over time and the door can swing back and forth with no control. Setting different blower speeds and turning a corner hard can swing the door around and randomly get to a position of either full heat or full AC, and a lot of people have developed their own set of "superstitions" to control a broken door. Full diagnostic procedures and a simple cheap fix are available from HeaterTreater on the Explorer HeaterTreater ebay listing or at the web site www.heatertreater.net cgallen
