  • The titanic was never actually marketed as unsinkable. That belief developed after the publishing of several articles describing the ships's building and system of watertight compartments and electronic watertight doors. It was largely concluded by the public -- awed by its size -- that the Titanic was unsinkable. One crippling design flaw, however, led to the sinking of the ship. The watertight compartments -- an innovation for their time -- had walls that did not reach the ceiling. Once the ship began to list, the water simply spilled over into the next compartment and then the next. It did not help that a severe shortage of lifeboats, more a design oversight than a statement of confidence, led people to the mistaken belief that a steel ship could not sink.
