Pushups are a form of communication and mean different things depending on how many pushups the lizard does, the position of the tail and legs, and whether the lizard inflates his or her throat, says Emilia Martins, biology professor at the University of Oregon. Mountain spiny lizards also do pushup displays-as do many species all over the country. These five-inch-long reptiles are territorial and do furious pushups to warn others away.
