A watch for an older guy ...a younger guy would probably want a video game of some kind ...for a play station or WII or something :)

Afternoon delight? If that's out of the question, guys tend to like pragmatic gifts. Ratty watch? New watch! No cologne? New cologne! Lame-ass wallet? Well, you can guess where I'm going on this one. I recently received a pimp tie, which was kind of weird but I'm wearing it now so it's pretty cool.

Men like stuff they can actually make use of. A bottle of his favorite whiskey or a 12 pack of beer go further than more "thoughtful" stuff from a women's perspective. A nice power tool if he uses them, or even a new shirt, but look at what he wears when you are not around, that is what he wants, not the sweaters or things he only wears when he is out with you. Get him the flannel shirt or the Nascar shirt, etc. Make sure you are clear on what sports team he likes and does not like before you go down that road. The worst thing you can do is buy a Philadelphia Eagle fan a Dallas Cowboy shirt thinking it is a "football" shirt. Also, good food stuff is always an easy thing to get him. Anything he does not have to cook or prepare himself is a plus.
