Each search engine uses a different formula. They are incredibly complicated and convoluted. Basically, it assigns each website a score and then does highest score first. There is a whole business on "Search Engine Optimization". Here's some more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SEO ... it goes rather in-depth. Basically, use validated HTML and script. Always use alt tags, etc. Meta data isn't that useful. Have lots of links point to your page to get it listed high up. Name all your pages something close to their content... "services.php" is a lot better than "page04.php" for a page about your company's services. There are some people that claim to know how to cheat search engines, but I HIGHLY doubt it. It is against Google's TOS I believe to try to cheat their algorithm.
