  • I have braces and everytime I have them tightened it hurts. From day one my orthodontist told me to sugarless gum. He even has a bowl of gum in his office and has his patients chewing before they leave the office. Some how the chewing action really helps to relieve the pain. I have had many of nights that I had to stay up half the night chewing gum to relieve the pain. Just make sure that it is sugarless.
  • I used to have braces as well and know exactly what your talking about. It has nothign to do with the cleanliness of your teeth. Spacers are just that, creating space between your teeth so that others have room to "fall in" properly. Me and my sister used to use Ambersol or another kind of ointment that numbs the area. Its doesnt last an extremely long time but if we put it on before bed we would fall asleep by the time the pain came back. I usually kept the bottle next to my bed just in case I woke up with pain, but it rarely happened. Hoe this helps. Take care!
  • I currently have spacers too... hurts like heck i know... don't bite hard. Tylonel is out of the question for me, but i find taking any stonr ibprohine like pain killers will work wonders along with anbesol... Don't eat hard candy, and don't chew gum... even thou it's sugarless it can haul the spacers off and get stuck to any wires you might have....
  • I haven't had braces before but I have to get them soon. :( My sister had braces before and she said to ask the dentist if there are special pain reliever.
  • bbbbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaacccccccccccceeeeeeeesssssssssssss ssssssssssssssuuuuuuuuuuucccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkk! Tylenol is not the way to go for me. IBprophine is the way to go! It works like crazyyyy! IBprophine is the shizznikk.
  • The pain is caused by compression of the blood vessels around the teeth. This compression increases the blood pressure locally causing soreness. Ask your orthodontist if they have any exercise wafers. Using the exercise wafer will reduce discomfort and work out the soreness quicker than without using one. The exercise wafer is a semi-circular piece of rubber that you place in your mouth and bite down on for 3-4 seconds at a time for about 15 min. Mine works really good! I just got braces this last Wednesday!
