The maguey worm is the caterpillar of the skipper butterfly. It is often found at the bottom of a bottle of mescal. The practise of adding the worm to mescal stems from an old custom of the Aztecs, who believed that the presence of an insect in an alcoholic beverage had spiritual significance.
