  • It depends whether you do it full time or part time. In the UK a Masters degree is typically 1 year full time. A PhD is typically 4 years - 1 year is usually spent researching the existing literature, followed by testing a preliminary hypothesis. Depending on the outcome of this it will determine how you proceed - whether you start the actually PhD (i.e. answering your research question), or need to do more research and more prelim testing.   • In the US it is usually 8 years to ABD (All But Dissertation). Four years to Bachelor's, two for Masters and two for the PhD course work. Then you have to research, write and defend your dissertation. How long that takes is up to you. For some people it can take many years, depending on what topic you choose, how hard it is to research and how organized you are when it comes to synthesizing that research and developing your writing.
