I wish I were more like you..my "sniffer" is very sensitive and sometimes people wearing perfume or after-shave lotion can make my stomach quesy! Jim's sense of smell is not very acute..I wish there were a button I could push to make mine less so! Happy Friday! :) ((hugs))

My brother can't smell anything, but it was caused by Parkinson's Disease.

It is a condition known as Hyposmia. Some of the causes are allergies, nasal polyps, viral infections and head trauma. It is estimated that up to 4 million people in the United States have hyposmia. Based on latest scientific evidence, hyposmia might also be a very early sign of Parkinson's Disease. You might want to make sure your doctor is aware of your condition.

I actually have a rather good sense of smell. However, I had a friend who fractured her skull while we were out rollerblading. We weren't wearing helmets, which is BAD! But anyway, she was fine, but as a result of the accident, she lost her sense of smell. It also affected her ability to really taste, so she started eating especially sweet and sour foods. Like lots of pickles.

You may want to look into zinc. A low zinc level can be linked with a loss of smell and is very common in a western diet. If you get a zinc suppleement be sure that it is balanced with a small amount of copper. Be careful not to over dose...dosages over 70mg daily for a long period of time can cause some problems. I think you are not alone, I also cannot smell since I can remember. I am worried because I really cannot smell anything, and I think it can be dangerous since one is not even able to smell smoke, gas, etc.
