ISO is an international standards organization. If a company wants an ISO certification, they have to petition ISO to grant the certificate. There are different standards under which a company can be certified. The ones getting the most attention have to do with compliance to a quality control standard. If ISO specified audits of the company indicate that company policies and employees follow quality procedures compliant with the appropriate ISO standard, ISO will issue a certificate of compliance and they can claim to be ISO certified. Periodic audits are completed to verify continued compliance or the certificate will be revoked or not renewed.
