Washer fluid is too cheap for me to have ever looked at a homemade alternative. In the climate we have here it would be imperative to have a freeze-proof fluid also. I'll stick with commercial fluids. I've never even heard of homemade fluid but have used straight water in the summer.
I've heard that the mixture you buy in the store can corrode wax and paint over time. Something to keep in mind. I've also heard that vinegar deteriorates the rubber hoses and rings after a while.
I have heard vinegar and water is ok, but never tried it.
Its small, fits in your glove box. It also has a built in rain repellent so no need for wipers in the rain at speed. And for very few dollars
For decades, I have done the following with very good results: in winter (ie, when. temp. is in 30's or below) use commercial stuff; when temp. is above 30's: in a gallon container, put 1 quarter cup of ammonia, a few drops of Dawn liquid dish wash detergent, & top off with tap water (add a few drops of blue dye if desired). This costs only pennies, & is very effective.

Thanks Dave. I also heard that vinegar is a good cleaner mixed with water. What would that do to your paint job though if it got on it? It is very cheap, I'll stick to it also!

I have no idea what vinegar would do to paint. I'll look around.

In this link they use vinegar on autos. I doubt it would have much effect on paint but would be concerned about any damage.
