the rise is 8" the tread is 12" SOME AREAS HAVE A 73/4" MAX RISE And a MiNIMUM OF 11 1/4" tread in the local building codes. the hight your atairs must go determins the distance ( or the length) the stair case must be. ( if you have access to local building codes the information will be there in the US the IBC book may be available on line (INTERNATIONAL BUILDING CODES)

Standard "rule of thumb" for stairs is 7-11. 7 inch rise, with 11 inch tread. Uniform building code allows up to 8 inch rise with as little as 10 inch tread. any thing more than 12 inch tread and it's to hard to clear your toes on the next step while going up. Reducing the rise to much less than 7 inches, really increase the number of steps required and usually adds too much length to the stairway taking usable space away from other areas.
