there would be alot of businesses that would be cited for not following the law. twelve dollars an hour would be closer to the need. even that would rock the industry so that prices would sky rocket instantly.
-
The main thing that would happen? Rampant inflation, as everything would cost more to produce, and other wages would go up commeasurately. Businesses would suffer along with everyone else. To me, wages paid has no correlation to whether or not someone decides to become a citizen.

Okay, my opinion... Every small business would immediately go into bankruptcy, and not a few big businesses would follow. Inflation would likely hit 50% within a month, and there would be food and fuel riots.

I'd be pretty excited, I work for minimum wage :)

You must keep in mind: If the minimum wage is raised, everything would be raised to reflect that increase. Why? Simply because the employers would never, ever allow that kind of an increase to go through without passing it on to the buying public. Currently gas is about $4+ per gallon. Without a doubt we would be looking at $12+ per gallon. Bread is currently about $2/loaf. I can assure you it would go to $6 per loaf. To do your wash at a laundramat or coin-op is about $1.50. Without a doubt it would go to $2.50 or higher. And what about property taxes for real estate? Do you think they will be spared? I seriously doubt it. Guaranteed: the taxing authorities will want "their piece of the action", too! Probably everything will go up by that percentage - 2 1/2 times to 3 times 250% to 300% - if not higher. And what about those folks who already earn $20 per hour. Do you honestly believe they will tolerate that huge increase for "hamburger flippers" and janitorial staff without demanding a sizable increase in their wages? In reality, everything would be sky high! With very few exceptions, no one ever "gets to have his/her cake and eat it" too - especially those folks at the bottom of the economic ladder - those earning minimum wage. I read the "Top Answer" and your comment. You have to think the situation all the way through to the conclusion I arrived at: In other words - MASSIVE inflation = HUGE unemployment! Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it! VTY, Ron Berue Yes, that is my real last name! Sources: Just some thoughts.

people wouldn't have to work 3 jobs just to make ends meet and that would give them more time to spend with their family and thats a great thing...also it would create more jobs since those who worked 3 jobs wouldn't have to, and all the bullshit about the skies going to fall...is that just bullshit

A few good answers and a couple of ignorant (meaning not knowing about something, vs stupid, which, if a person keeps being ignorant instead of researching things, people will start wondering if there is a difference) answers. There are several that do know about the economy. They are what are called informed people. They gave good answers too. Everything revolves around minimum wage mostly. Example: Minimum wage is $7.00 an hour. A good wage is twice minimum wage or $14.00 an hour. You triple minimum wage to $21.00 an hour, then THOSE employees wages will be $42.00 an hour (twice minimum wage). You are all happy, making $21 an hour now. Last month you went and had your car tuned up, the bill was $200. This month the bill for the SAME job is ... let's see, you went from $7 to $21... that is 3 times. The bill now is $600. NO ONE gains by raising minimum wage. Everyone LOSES because of taxes. That is what happened with Mexico (and many other countries), inflation, inflation, inflation. Pretty soon a gallon of milk cost THOUSANDS of Pesos. Finally the government issued new money and everyone had to turn in thousands of the old money to get a little of the new money. When I was in Thailand a few years ago, there were 20 baht to one US dollar. Now it takes close to 40 of them to make a dollar. Raising the minimum wage in any country is bad news. It is worst for the people who are getting paid minimum wage. Oregon's minimum wage is $7.95 an hour now. So I have to raise my employees wages again. Pretty soon they will be making $20 and hour and will be able to buy...what? with it??? A loaf of bread and a gallon of milk? Research the economy. Become an informed citizen. Being informed is good for everyone! You really didn't think minimum wage people would be getting $20 and hour while the long time employees stayed at $14 an hour, did you? It doesn't work that way. EVERYTHING costs more. Dang near instantly.

The McDonald's $1 menu would become the McDonald's $4 menu.
-
Mexico would become the manufacturing capital of the world. Prices would go up. The minimum wage sector would also suffer due to small businesses failing and alot of jobs being eliminated. Basically, it would hurt the economy more than it would help. If an employer is paying someone $20 an hr, its really costing around $28-$30 an hr by the time everything else gets paid for an employee.

If business wants people to work for them then they better be willing to offer proper wages in return for labors efforts! Business wants nothing less than legalized slavery! If they thought they could get people to work for less they would pay it!
