How does a single gas pump hold 3 different octanes? How do I know I'm getting the grade I picked?

    The different ratings should be stored underground in seperate resevoirs. When you select a different petrol, then the pump will select from a different resevoir.
    Knowing you are getting the right one? I guess you will have to trust the station on that one..

    Once every six months, each stations pumps and gasoline are tested, by each state, for accurate flow and octane rating. in the past, some gas stations have manipulated the gas pumps to deliver only regular unleaded gasoline, when the customer was paying for mid or high octane. these state inspectors will also come unannounced. many gasoline retailers have lost their license, because of this.

    The three different octanes are underground, in separate resevoirs. the gasoline pump is just the mechanism to switch from dispensing regular, mid-grade, or premium from these resevoirs.
