The downtown area and waterfront has alot to offer. Fells Point is a fun evening out. There is a great gallery/museum of contemporary art within walking distance of the main waterfront area. Lots of historic sites to see. Fort McHenry is interesting - learn all about how and why our national anthem was penned. Other parts of Baltimore are very dirty and very crime ridden. It has one of the highest crime rates in the country. The outlying areas range from very upscale to utterly filthy. The majority of the outlying areas are mostly blue collar workers and federal employees. Lots of interesting little neighborhoods. Boating and fishing are big here. Unfortunately, of all the places I have lived, Baltimore and area have one of the biggest problems with litter and graffiti. Yuck!

Baltimore is a fun city with a lot of style. The inner harbor is nice, and if you want to go out, federal hill, powerplant, fells point, and canton are all good places to get a drink. The inner harbor is also home to the Under Armor headquarters. The water taxi is a nice little ride. Don't venture to far out from the inner harbor though, you can easily drive into a 'subpar' area. Lots of crime in certain neighborhoods, but they are still safe to drive through.

I lived in baltimore for 20 years. I agree with another answer in that baltimore is very diverse. In the city you will find ghettos and crime in some areas; and in others great history and pretty sites. There are lots of historic areas in and around baltimore city. The suburbs can be very nice well kept neighborhoods and thats where i would live if i went back. Probably somewhere around catonsville which is technically baltimore county. One of the best things about baltimore is the variety. There is a large variety of people, cultures, races, and things to do. There is pretty much something for everyone. I also love that it is close to other cities - about 45 mins from DC and 2 hours from Philadelphia. The BWI airport also flies all over and is pretty much unlimited. While many people think of only the ghetto when thinking about Baltimore there is sooooo much more to the place. If you're worried about that and still are interested in MD I would check out Columbia. Its one of the richest cities in the US and really close to DC and Baltimore.
