You don't think it is? I think tipping is a huge problem in the UK, and from what I've seen of other countries I wouldn't say the UK is any better, it's just we hide our rubbish more successfully then they do in other countries. I'd agree that if you visit the more picturesque villages or towns in the UK you won't see much tipping, but I think it's probably the same for villages around the world. Certainly the ones I've seen. In the city, tipping is a huge problem. It's just people tip their rubbish in poorer areas, where nobody else who didn't have to go wouldn't. Most other cities in other parts of the world leave their rubbish on the streets so everybody can see it, rather then hiding it away like we do in the UK. Maybe that gives the impression they have a bigger problem than we do?

Class culture. There was that nineteenth century phase when doormen/cab drivers and so on just didn't exist if you were wearing a top hat. Now we're terribly frightened someone might take offence at the implied hierarchy. It's noticeable that countries where class culture never had much influence (US/Australia) tipping is much easier and more prevalent.

I think the UK has a bigger tip culture than most of the other European countries!

Becxause we are all tight bastards! But in all seriousness, I don't think it is, some of the resurants have inbuilt service charges though, and other places we tip, or at least I always do...
