It is legal! At least it is legal in a long list of places. The questions you are asking were tackled years ago in all the places that have legalised prostitution. Maybe it would be better to ask what sort of places is it not legal?

Prostitution is primarily illegal because it is an unethical practice. It allows husbands to cheat, it's selling a woman's (or a man's) dignity and body, and this simply should not be allowed. Many women are forced into this profession by 'pimps', and it is cruel and it should not be done. Let's face it. It is wrong, and disgusting. For goodness sake, young girls are being sex trafficked and are not allowed to escape the buildings, and live in Appalling conditions! It isn't fair. Prostitution is only beneficial to the clients, thus being an evil practice. Before you question prostitution, you must do some background research on it, I recommend you to read the book "Sex Slaves - Sex Trafficking in Asia". Unless you know how the prostitutes feel about their jobs, how can you ever understand why it is illegal?

I think vices such as drugs, prostitution etc should be decriminalized. It's not the place of the government to preach morality. However it shouldn't be raising tax revenue from something harmful to society. The government should just wash it's hands of the whole thing. In Germany prostitution was legalized. A unemployed german girl was told she "fit the profile" and was offered a job in brothel by the government. She refused. The german government told her if she didn't accept the job her unemployment benefit would be cut. She protested saying it was immoral. They said that prostitution had been legalized and therefore wasn't immoral anymore. They said she was being prejudice!

It makes no sense to make it illegal. The arguement above from Answering Anna makes no sense, except that she is applying her moral standards to others. No one should force anyone into it, nor to use it. That's why you said moderated, and that's critical. There are sex slaves, they are not prositutes, and it's the pimps that need to be shut down. If an adult person wants to sell their sexual services, and an adult wants to buy, and it meets their moral test, then why would the law interfer. Some people like to hunt and kill animals, is that murder.. no, it's hunting. Some may moraly disagree with that. I wish people would not impose their morals on others. Gambling is much more dangerous, and sociall harmful, but goverment runs it.. it's called the lottery, and people spend way to much on it. I suspect the reason it's illegal is that the goverment hasn't found a way to become the provider. Leave consenting adults to do what they wish, as long as they harm no one, or no minor. At least we get rid of the pimps and the drugs.

Recommending that ( pick one: prostitution, drugs, suicide, etc. ) be legalized not only contributes to the degradation of the individual, but also contributes to a general decline in civilization and civilized behavior. It effectively undermines parental attempts to raise responsibile, consiencious children by indicating that such things are legal, therefore acceptable. I am unalterably opposed to deciminalizing anything except perhaps marijuana possession for personal use.
