Yes, but the higher the odds of winning, the lower the payout, the same as with Horse racing. In horse racing, if you bet on a horse to "show," you can triple your chances of winning (you win if it comes in first, second or third) but you win far less than if you bet on it to win.

Yep, Blackjack is your best bet, the casino only has about a 1% edge compared to other games like roulette where you have no chance, especially on the US double 00 wheel.

Roulette can actually have some of the best odds in the casino as well, if played properly. A single green 0 table (what you can easily find still even in Vegas) run at about a 2.7% house edge, these numbers based on betting only either in(numbers in the table, whether it be a quad group, line, or single number bet, etc.) or out (all black, red, etc.).
However, by playing both you can compensate your bet and lower the house edge to a mere 0.8% (blackjack is 0.6%-3%). If you bet eight on all black on roulette along with betting two each on four sets of quad numbers, and place those four bets based on showing the maximum number of reds possible for those, thereby granting the highest amount of numbers on the table of a combination of reds and blacks, you can provide a buffer for your bet. Win the out and lose the in, you're even. Based on US payouts, win the in but lose the out, you've made two dollars. Win them both and win eight on the out, ten on the in based on the six lost.

I was reading recently in some magazine (Scientific American, maybe? I wish I could remember) that some video poker machines actually pay out 102% of what you put in, over a long enough period of time.

I'm VERY doubtful. I've never heard of a casino giving an edge to the player over the long-term.

"some video poker machines actually pay out 102% of what you put in.
Very true, it's based on payout points though and you need to make sure to check that before playing. Video poker programming works similarly to slots, with a guaranteed payout percentage of slightly less than 100%. The more people playing machines tied to the same program, the better the odds for the individual, so find the best payouts AND the most crowded machines. Also, higher payout percentages are ALWAYS offered for higher bets, so betting $5 on a max $5 machine will pay a higher percentage than betting $1 on a $5 max machine, something a lot of people aren't aware of and the reason the casino still wins overall. Generally, throughout Vegas in most major hotels you can always find at least one video poker machines that pays out an average of 102% to those playing based on effective strategy. Casino wins based on those who don't understand the most effective hand rules.

With a good system, you can get very handsome odds with blackjack. A solid betting strategy and the ability to keep track of the cards you've seen (not card counting per se, but to at least have a general idea of wether the deck is with or against you) can take you far in blackjack.

Craps also has better odds for the player, with less of it hinging on strategy and skill than blackjack.

Slots are cash machines stuck in reverse. :)

Me, I play horses.

Blackjack and certain video poker machines are the only casino games where an educated player, using ideal stategy (and card counting in bj) has a theoretical advantage over the house. Pass line and come bets with full odds on craps and perfect basic strategy play on blackjack (without card counting) both have a less than 3% house edge. Meaning you will lose an average of $3 for every $100 wagered, over the course of a lifetime. Avoid at all costs Let it Ride, low limit slot machines, field bets in craps, and any "gimmicks" that aren't a part of normal game play. ie. "royal match" or "double exposure blackjack"
Poker, on the other hand, is a game where you are not competing against the house. You play against other players and the only limit to your potential advantage is your skill relative to your opponents. The casino merely provides a location, dealer, chips, and rules for your game. In exchange they take a small percentage of each pot, usually 5% with a maximum that ranges from $1-$5 (depending on the limit of the game.
A bank of slot machines advertising "99.99 % Payback" only need contain 1 machine set to that payout. The rest of the machines in that area can be set however the casinos see fit.
To find out almost everything else about casino games, go to http://wizardofodds.com/ It is by far the most comprehensive gaming website I have ever come across.

Any game that takes a commission such as Pai Gow or Baccarat have better odds than the other games. You increase your odds in Blackjack if you follow basic stratagy. The answer before me is right ... slots are cash machines in reverse! ;o)
