  • Cats communicate mainly through scent maps of their environment. In the wild they have large territories and meet very few other cats. They are solitary animals and are very antisocial. Scent marking is helpful to a cat, it reminds it about places to avoid, places where good hunting grounds can be found, where the cats' *core* area is (where it feels most safe). Cats communicate with other cats through pheromones (volatile chemicals that other cats can pick up giving them information-only tiny amounts are needed to give these signals). Humans have about 20 million scent receptors in our nose, cats have about 200 million! It is important to have scent glands in order to communicate both with itself when mapping territory, and to communicate with other cats! xx Tess (3rd year vet student)
