• I loved that one, and also The Right Stuff...speaking of politics, that film was out before the '84 election, and I was sure that it and all of John Glenn's heroics would help propel him to be at least a major contender for the Democratic nomination that year, but I guess his personality was too bland...they couldn't have done worse than that putz Mondale, although I don't know if anyone could have beaten Reagan at that point...

• that was my 2nd...as a 20-year-old college student in '80, I voted for John Anderson, before I realized how pointless it is to vote for a 3rd-party candidate, with the Electoral College et al...

• True. I liked Carter in '76, but the crap that happened in 78-80 basically soured me to Democrats at the Federal level for good. In 30 years of working where he did, my father was laid off exactly once, in 1980.

• I also liked Carter in '76, but soured on him by '80, though not on all Dems...I didn't think much of Reagan, either, hence my Anderson vote...I didn't come around to Reagan 'til '84, with a significant push from the nomination of Mondale...

• I thought Reagan was better than Anderson. I don't know what it was, but he just rubbed me the wrong way. As far as local dems go, I was kinda sour for about a decade when they hung a very good mayor out to dry for putting the city before the party, but I've come back, since we have a pretty good mayor now...

• funny thing about '84 was that I was living in New Haven, CT, in my first yr of Yale's MBA program...the political climate at Yale is VERY liberal, even for an Ivy League school - my prof for a core course called "Political Analysis for Management" was a social policy adviser to Mondale's campaign, and I barely told anyone I knew on campus that I voted for Reagan, because I wanted (and needed) to focus on schoolwork and not get bogged down in pointless political arguments...
