The first law requiring liability coverage was passed in Massachusetts, 1927. I live in New Hampshire that does not require any car insurance, unless you have a previous at fault accident. However, if you have an "at fault" accident without having insurance coverage, you will be required to post a bond or cash equal to the amount of damage you caused in that accident.

Texas requires liability insurance and we're required to show proof of it to register the vehicle, and prior to annual state safety and emmission inspections. There are some cities that will arrest the driver and impound the vehicle if he is unable to show proof insurance. It's best if one just buy the insurance because the state can make it miserable for you if you don't.
