  • I'm not sure, but I went onto the social security death index to see what I could find. Sometimes you can tell by the first names. No help there this time, but there are only 5 Cheezig on the ssdi, and 4 of them are in Minnesota, so I am guessing some sort of Scandinavian, maybe?
  • The family immigrated from Russia. But I can't really find it's basic roots.
  • According to a 1900 Census record I came across it lists a Leon Cheezig with a birth place of Turkey. His Fathers birth place is listed as Turkey.
  • I would go with Northern European. the location of the families in the US as Minnesota and North Dakota, are indicative of scandinavian background. Although the Leon Cheezig found might have had a father born in Turkey, this is almost certainly not a Turkish name. The family may have been temporarily in Turkey for reasons of business. I have seen the word "cheezig" on a Danish language site. It is probably an adjective, meaning unknown. As I cannot stress often enough though, the only way to really discover your surname origin is to trace BACK from yourself to the ancestor who first held it. that may or may not be possible (noble ancestors poss. commoners zilch) But you still might get ideas or probabilities by going as far as you can.
