  • Read poetry (ALL KINDS) like a fiend. Join song writing circles. Observe what's poetic in the common everyday things that people say. Always be on the look out for how the inexpressible CAN find expression through the simplest of words. There is a program at NYU that trains musical theatre lyricists and composers. Before you try and get into that program you'll need proof (beyond your own expressed desire) that you have what it takes. Start NOW! Ask yourself what stories (in the news, from history, those you've been told by family and friends) could be told through a series of songs? What are some of your favorite songs? What new lyrics could you write for them. Do those lyrics support the theme/story already established in the song? Listen to instrumental music and write lyrics for the songs you like (and don't like). Finally, no matter how good you are you will ultimately work with a writing partner. Look for a partner. Do you have friends/ associates who write music? Start small with individual songs then perhaps give yourself the goal of writing a one act or a children's show. Be brave! Good luck
