cell phones have not been linked with increased lightning fatalities. it's the phones with cords that will get you. lightning strikes when streamers of oppositly charged molecules meet. all objects on the ground send up these streamers, but cell phones do not have significantly large ones. since they are not connected through a power source, they do not increase the danger. standing outside does.
