  • When I was young, I ingested drugs like the rest of the 70's teens, and we all moaned about how terrible it was that they were illegal. Now that I'm older, I see a lot of families where the parents are addicted to drugs and the children are neglected or abused. The parents really want to take care of their kids -- they do. But the craving to get high is stronger, and all sorts of horrific things happen in the wake of that. Whether or not the drugs should be legalized, there's no question about the terrible price society pays for addiction. These kids grow up to repeat the pattern: they end up on welfare, in jail, on the streets, etc. I think making the drugs difficult to obtain is only one piece of the puzzle -- the whole mess is tangled up with poverty, unemployment, a me-first cultural orientation, and the general failure of our society to apply our best efforts to save our most vulnerable citizens when they're young and there's still time. The same applies to alcohol, of course. Except that it is much easier to obtain.
