In DC comics lore, the Speed Force is an extra-dimensional energy source that powers all super-speedsters. Early origins for characters like The Flash (all incarnations), Max Mercury, and Johnny Quick had them get their power via different means. It was discovered later that it wasn't heavy water fumes, electro-chemical baths, or arcane mathematical formulas that gave them the power, but that the event somehow created a link to the Speed Force, allowing them to tap into that massive pool of energy. I've been out of the comics world for many years, but friends inform me now that the Speed Force is gone, absorbed by the current Flash Bart Allen. Other speedsters still exist, like Jay Garrick (the original Flash, Garrick is now a metahuman whose genetics-driven power is enhanced speed) but the boost given to them by their Speed Force link is gone.
