  • The Star Spangled Banner has been the official national anthem for the USA since 1931. Before that, there was no official anthem - but the song "Hail, Columbia" was used as kind of an "unofficial" anthem, as it was used in the situations where the national anthem would be played. Occasionally, "Yankee Doodle" or "My Country Tis of Thee" would be used.
  • "The Star Spangled Banner" didn't become the official US National Anthem until 1931. So the US had no official anthem not only between 1776 and 1812, but between 1812 and 1931. Congress designates the National Anthem, and could change it. Personally, I'd rather see "America, The Beautiful" be the anthem - less military, and much easier to sing. :o)
