  • As a DM, I always kept animal companions at their original level. Companions are a useful tool to help druids level up in the early years. Allow the companion to level up and you give an unfair advantage to the tree-hugger. Same goes for mage familiars.
  • Well, assuming you have the Player's Handbook, it explains it all. Air Elementals technically don't qualify as Animal Companions, as they aren't animals, but that's beside the point. You should just use the table on page 36 of the PHB, and I assume you're going to be using the "7th Level or Higher (Level -6)" bit. Just take your Druid level, subtract 6, and use the table like normal to figure out how your animal companion has changed. You don't gain levels like Fighter, or Sorcerer, but you gain hit dice, which for an Elemental gives you: a) d8 hit dice, so that's health b) Base attack bonus like a Cleric, so a 7HD Elemental will have the base attack bonus of a level 7 Cleric. c) Air Elementals get saves like a Rogue of their hit dice. d)2+int mod skill points per level. Hope this helped!
