"Actually mescal is a generic term meaning any distillate of the many species of agave (or maguey) plant, tequila included. The worm is an agave worm which is a butterfly larve. Doesn't do anything to you really. It's the mescal that will do something to you."

There's no worm in tequila. It is the agave worm, that is butterfly larva. Mezcal generally refers to all agave-based distilled liquors that are not tequila (a mezcal variant made principally from the blue agave plant in the town of Tequila and the surrounding region of Jalisco). The use of the worm is exclusive to mezcal, since the Mexican standards authority, Norma Oficial Mexicana (NOM), prohibits adding insects or larvae to tequila.

There's no worm in tequila, or at least there isn't supposed to be. It is the agave worm, that is butterfly larva. Mezcal generally refers to all agave-based distilled liquors that are not tequila (a mezcal variant made principally from the blue agave plant in the town of Tequila and the surrounding region of Jalisco). Further mescal is a generic term meaning any distillate of the many species of agave (or maguey) plant, tequila included. The worm is an agave worm which is a butterfly larve.
