Can someone explain to me the classical music genre's cataloging system?

Individual composers' works have sometimes been catalogued. Mozart's works were catalogued by Kochel, therefore each work has a Kochel number, 'k374' for example. Classical works are also given opus numbers, generally giving an indication of the order in which they were published. In record stores recordings are usually catalogued under the composer's name, but sometimes subdivided into Symphonies, Concerti, Chamber Music, etc.
