Why do some questions never make it onto the front page but go straight to "unanswered questions"?

I've seen this happen in three ways. One way is if your settings are set to hide 'conversational questions', then they won't appear on the front page, but they do for other people. Another way I've seen it happen is if there are so many people posting at once, it's in the queue but just gets bumped immediately off the page from all the other posts. That often happens on the busiest times. And also if the person has asked many questions and they are unanswered and on the front page still, they are not allowed to get posted there. We are only allowed 2 unanswered questions on the front page at a time.
