  • Why so many rice questions?
  • Many kinds of rice -- in India -- there are shops that only sell rice -- dozens and dozens of different types of rice, just in one shop. Some kinds of rice I can get at my local grocer: sweet purple rice, sweet black rice, wild rice, sushi rice, jasmine rice, basmati rice, brown rice, long grain white rice, long grain brown rice, red rice. There are many difference between the rices, how long they take to cook, how long they take to digest, differences in taste, and in nutritive properties. Of the rices you can buy in the grocery store here in the USA, basmati probably cooks the quickest (20 minutes), it is also the easiest to digest. The sweet rices are eaten as dessert in Asia. Sushi rice is sticky, and easy to clump into balls to load raw fish over. Brown rice, and other heavy rices have a lot more nutrients and fibre than white rices do, they also go bad quicker than white rice does -- best to make just as much as you need for the day.
