How big is your Koi? The reason I ask is the most humane way I would use to put a fish down if I had to, is putting it in a container with enough water for it to swim a little and then put the whole container in the freezer (with a lid). As the water cools the fish will go to sleep. If your fish is too big for this then I suggest contacting your local fish/pet supply or vet.

I once had an African Albino three clawed frog. He was small when I got him but he was the size of my hand with legs handging down at the end. His end came when he tried to eat my glass cleaner. They had been in the tank since the begining and so I never thought he would eat him...but he tried. I came home and the back fin of the cleaner was sticking up the back of my forgs head(Ugg was his name, short for Ugly)My then boyfriend crushed his little head, quickly and then we disposed of him.It was horrible,Ugg was gulping and in pain.We couldnt pull the other fish without ripping his skin.

I used to drop sick fish into boiling water, but it might take a while for it to die, given its size..

People suggest various ways of putting down fish, and I have to say that most of them seem to me to be extremely cruel. The method I use, which sounds horrible, but which provides an instantaneous death, is to quickly net the fish, put it outside, and stamp on its head. The fish has no time to feel pain. Better than some of the other methods which give a protracted or a painful death.
