a good rule of thumb is to avoid the very center of Manhattan, ie an area bordered by 34th St to the south, 72nd St to the north, 3rd Ave to the east, and 8th Ave to the west...prices should be a bit lower outside this "box"...another thing is to try your luck on a name-your-own-price site like priceline.com...

There's a relatively inexpensive hotel on W 81st St at Columbus Ave. called The Excelsior. You're across the street from the American Museum of Natural History and the Hayden Planetarium. 1 block from Central Park and the West side subway which can take you anywhere in the city.

The East Side tends to be less costly than the West Side. Here's a well-organized guide that I use that lists all the best web sites for places to stay in New York City and things to do in New York City. http://www.findingdulcinea.com/guides/Travel/New-York-City-Survival-Guide.html

Are you open to hostels? There's one on the upper west side, called Hostelling International New York, 891 Amsterdam Ave, 2 blocks from the subway, felt like a safe place to be. Depending what room you get, it's about $45/night.

I stayed in a Quality Inn that was just a few yards east of Time Square that wasn't too expensive.
