It would have some cooling effect I'm sure, primarily in the area directly in front of the refrigerator, however it would not be recommended. Refrigerators are not designed to cool rooms, and do not have fans designed to circulate the air in a room. It would likely be an expensive proposition, as it would have to run much longer to cool the room than an air conditioner which is designed for this purpose.

No. A refrigerator works by transferring heat from its interior to its exterior. The ambient air then removes that heat. So, if you open a refrigerator inside a room, it will be transferring heat into the room, which then gets transferred back into the inside of the refrigerator (cooling is the removal of heat). At a theoretical best, you'd break even (no net change in temperature). In reality, this process would slowly *HEAT* the room. The reason that refrigeration and air conditioning work is that the volume for heat rejection is separated from the volume that is being cooled. http://home.howstuffworks.com/refrigerator4.htm
