  • Similiar behavioral characteristics for masculinity and femininity. Or confirmation of conventional wisdom that gay men have brains like women and gay women have brains like men.
  • So in reality it is not like most people who against gay and lesbian people say when they say that it is a choice that they make. It seems now that perhaps people who are homosexuals might have been intended to be the opposite gender but due to hormone imbalances while they were in the womb they might have become the other sex.
  • Not much. Differences in brain structure are to be expected with differences in experience, psychology, learned behaviors, etc. In other words, correlation does not prove causation. It's just as likely as not that the brain develops in accord with chosen habits and lifestyle choices, as it is that choices and inclinations are due to different brain structures. To conclude that sexuality is determined by brain-structure, one would have to determine the brain structures of a large test group at early childhood if not in-utero, and then see if the differences THEN correlated with differences in developed sexuality at age 25-30. And even if sexuality is predominately influenced or even totally dictated by genetics and/or early development, such a discovery should have no effect on the debate. Such a discovery still would not deal with the question of moral choice and responsibility: *IF* homosexual acts and lifestyles are wrong, then they are wrong regardless of whether or not certain people are predisposed to them when others aren't. By way of comparison, being a chronic drunk/alcohol addict is wrong -- it doesn't matter that some people are genetically predisposed to be alcoholics. Hitting and abusing people is wrong - it doesn't matter that the abuser has a genetic predisposition to anger or violence. In all such cases, the person so afflicted is still morally obliged and responsible to control and resist his immoral tendencies. Knowing that you have such a weakness or tendency does not reduce your responsibility, but rather increases it. Having such an inherent tendency does not constitute license to indulge it. The fact that such "natural" tendencies exist, in no way justifies them, and certainly does not prove them to be wholesome, good, or worthwhile ... or even morally neutral. In short, what the advocates of gay rights fail to understand in their opponents' arguments is that their point is ACTIONS are always chosen. No one is condeming anyone for how they feel or whatever primal desires or impulses they may have. The complaint is that they give-in to and indulge such appetites. The source or cause of such appetites is irrelevent to the question of the morality of satisfying them.
  • Would the consequence be that is what "causes" gay/lesbians to be as they are? The shape of the brain? Somehow that seems too simplistic to me. :)
  • Mother natures way of human population control
  • Brains are shaped similar with all people. I don't think sexual preference has anything to do with it. If I'm wrong the conclusion may be that gay people are born like that and not became gay for some reason.
  • 'New research'? Where was it carried out?
  • As I was asked where this research was done, I give here some details about it: 1) "According to a new study, gay men and straight women share similar brains in regards to how their brains respond to emotion, mood, anxiety, etc. The new study has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and has found that not only are gay men and straight women similar in how their brains are shaped, but gay women and straight men are similar as well. Researchers from Sweden’s Karolinska Institute carried out the study by doing brain scans of 90 volunteers. What they found was that the barins of heterosexual men and homosexual women were actually asymmetric, as they had a larger right side of the brain. Scientists are still trying to determine is the shape of the brain is inherent, and if it has any consequence on sexual orientation." Using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, researchers from Stockholm's Karolinska Institute found that the brains of straight men and gay women tended to be slightly asymmetric, with the right hemisphere somewhat larger than the left. The asymmetry was not seen in straight women and gay men. And building on earlier imaging research showing different patterns of brain activation between the sexes in response to emotional stimuli, the Swedish researchers showed that certain activation patterns for gay men and women tended to more closely resemble those of the opposite sex than their own."
