Unfortunately TV is more susceptible to noise and "multipath distortion" than is radio. This is due to many factors, including the modulation used, frequency of transmission, the amount of information carried, etc. Digital TV is a little better in that you are likely to get a very clear picture, or none at all. At the fringes, you will see blocks of bad pixels, and distorted or choppy audio. But slightly beyond the fringe area, the picture will disappear completely. Whether this is a good or bad thing is open for debate. I agree that having more channels is not necessarily a good thing, but in the case of PBS, I think it's great. They tend to having interesting content on all of them, as opposed to the commercial stations that throw all manner of junk on them.
