A nautical mile is one minute of latitude or one minute of logitude ( for Blaylock, at the equator,6076 feet) versus 5280 feet for a standard mile.

I was operating on the assumption that everybody knew that 1 mile = 5,280 feet. This is a value that all should have learned back in grade school. *************** "Bob Blaylock: Only valid criticism I can see of my brother's answer is that he didn't mention the relationship of a nautical mile to a minute of arc at the earth's surface. As this is the definition of a nautical mile, it ought to be mentioned." I did not include that part because I was unaware of that part until I read scubabob's answer and your comment on it. Since that answer provided that information, I did not see the need to include it in mine.
