They are QUITE fast, actually. See this link for some interesting reading: http://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/yell/vol14-1-2a.htm

I believe there are plenty of nature footage that shows them dining on salmon and other fish that glide through the streams and such. All they have to do is take a quick swipe of a claw and lunch is served!

They are actually omnivores ... they do not do much hunting, but they will scoop/swat fish out of a stream, knock over a tree to get the eggs from a nest, flip rocks or dig for grubs & bugs, they will also corner small rodents in their holes then dig them out, and they will scavenge from dead carcasses that are recent kills.

I've heard Grizzley bears are actually really fast. I think most of the time they eat fish.

They are not carnivores. They are omnivores. and they may be bulky but they are like sumo wrestlers, incredibly quick. Some can run and catch moose and caribou calves. They are fast in short bursts.

I heard your average bear may look big and bulky but they can attain speeds of up to 60 km an hour in short bursts. Do not try to outrun a bear, it will catch you easily.

Grizzly bears are in the Order Carnivora and evolved from a carnivorous ancestor, but most bears are omnivorous, their diet up to 80% plant material. Certain times of the year though, grizzly bears eat elk and moose calves, another time of the year they eat a lot of insects (ants/moths), or fish (salmon) so their diets can be quite carnivorous. Certain individual animals can also get quite good at taking down large prey, like subadult ungulates. They may look big and bulky, but they are fast.
