I think he was killed by Doomsday in like 1993 or something, he was revived soon after.

He and Doomsday killed eachother, then Superman came back to life during the Reign of the Supermen storyline.

Like everyone has been saying yes Doomsday killed Superman. In the movie, Superman was dead then Lex Luthor cloned him. The cloned superman did not have as good of morals as the actual Superman and so little by little clone Superman went evil (what a plot twist). then it turns out actual superman can't die but his organs slow to a near halt in energy production and slows his life functions to a crawl giving the appearance hes dead. He was revived in the fortress of solitude and then went back to Metropolis to fight clone superman and of course he won.
