the truth. When they are old enough to ask they are old enough to know. Tell them in terms they can understand (which might mean very simplified vocabulary) but don't promote the traditional lies. I asked when I was five and my parents told me the cold hard facts that very day. They told me in terms a five-year-old could understand, but they told me. I have done the same with my children. It takes the juvenile giggles out of sex and returns it to the adult topic it should be.
