what's next? How much more are we going to get screwed?

It understable... The fee for the first checked bag marks the first time that an airline will charge for a service that has always been included in the airfare. Passengers will be charged $15 for their first piece of luggage. The airline, blaming high fuel costs, also plans other fee hikes, domestic flight cutbacks and layoffs.

I'm a corporate travel consultant, and with the way the economy is now, I'm not surprised. However, it's also depressing. I have business travellers who have to fly, and it's really depressing to see all the fees keep going up (not just on American). I haven't even flown myself in almost 4 years! Makes this once funny sketch from Mad TV seem that much closer to reality....

I worked for an airline for 31 years...I think the idea sucks..but airtravel is still the cheapest way to go...If you don't believe me check out the bus/train fares. With the huge increase in fuel prices I can forgive AA a little for this...but I still think it is bad PR. I also think this could backfire on them if people start increasing the weight of each piece of luggage up to the maximum allowable per piece.

It's ridiculous! Others are cutting down on baggage too. Jet Blue allows only one free bag now. Fuel costs may be part of the reason, but that is covered in the inflated ticket prices. It is more just a question of greed. Th airlines know that people are going to fly. They know that people need two bags usually. $$$...
