I believe that every vehicle we own in any state, whether its a gift or we purchase it, must have a Title of Ownership, regardless.

I live in Massachusetts, and I once had an old Volvo that was my sons, and he just gave it to me. Eventually I bought the Envoy and wanted to donate Volvo to the junk yard and proceeds go to Cancer fund. They would NOT even tow it, without a Title, that is the law here, in Mass. Not sure about other states..

You left out one very important part. who's name is the title in and how have you registered this vehicle in the state of california? or have you?? No state is going to forgive, on a car title. there has to be a paper trail to follow the vehicle, for proper ownership and registration. What if the gifted vehicle is proven stolen or is reported stolen? you have no proof of ownership and you may be arrested. Gifts are great. a vehicle gift is sometimes red- flagged from the beginning. it suggests that something improper may be invoved. Get the title, transfer to your name, pay the price, and get legal.
