According to Wikipedia, a bedroom community, dormitory town, commuter town or dormitory village is a community that is primarily residential in character, with most of its workers commuting to a nearby town or city to earn their livelihood.

I believe that if you look up "bedroom community" in a dictionary, you will find a picture of Cohasset, Massachusetts as an illustration. Cohasset is the town I grew up in, and it fits many people's concept of what a bedroom community is. 1) Within easy commute of a major city. Cohasset is approximately 16 miles south of Boston, or about a 40 minute commute with traffic. 2) A town mainly supported by residential property taxes vs. business/industrial taxes. 89% of Cohasset's budget (internally) comes from residential taxes. 3) A town with leisure or recreational facilities. Cohasset has a beautiful public ocean beach, a harbor with a sailing club and a yacht club, and two town parks with hiking trails and camping facilities. 4) A limited amount of industry/businesses. A major drawback to growing up in Cohasset was that there was nothing to do and nowhere to work as a teenager. My first job was at a restaurant in the next town. There was one liquor store, one bar, a 3 lane bowling alley and no movie theatre in Cohasset. 5) Residents who are involved in the community and the schools. I have never met townspeople in any other area, either within Massachusetts or in other states, who have shown so much civic pride. They are involved in everything from the town meeting (which frequently overflows the largest venue in town) to the schools. 6) High quality public school systems. The graduation rate at Cohasset High School is a little bit over 98%. The college attrition rate was 85% in the late seventies when I graduated. It has dropped slightly to around 82%. Most private schools would love to have numbers like that to brag about. In summary, I consider Cohasset to be the quintessential bedroom community. Or as I like to say...Cohasset is a great place to be from.

A city where everyone goes elsewhere for work, school, and play. I live in one of these "bedroom communities" and it sucks. •The high school is on the city line but still mostly in a neighboring city. •We have nothing for the 24 hour crowd. We have an Anytime Fitness, but nothing for entertainment or food. -When I was a kid we got in a lot of trouble because there was nothing to do except drink and smoke pot.
