    Good question; I'm not sure about the west but here in Appalachia we had an outbreak of pine beetles last year that did some major damage to the white pine population especially. ` I wonder if the events are related somehow.

    In the southwest, yes, very bad. Arizona and New Mexico are hardest hit. They are a problem way up north in British Columbia also. Some damage in the national parks along the Sierra in California, too.
