When I try to play some video files (wmv) in Windows media player, I get the error "Audio codec required to play this file not found", "Video codec not found," etc. Why is this?

You seem to be confusing two different aspects of the digital media technology. WMV and MPEG are container formats. They contain the information that identifies what the raw audio and video is, and how it has been encrypted. The audio and video codecs are the software packages that are actually used to interpret the data. When you open the WMV file, it tells the computer what audio and video codecs to use on the attached audio and video data. If you don't have those codecs installed on your computer, you'll get an error.

Well that seems to say like Audio is Female, Video is Male, the vocal identifies the female and the form identifies the male.. I know the "codec is not found inthe computer". Why cant WMV say exactly WHICH CODEC it wants, one or more, so I can install it so WMV can play the file for me? Are you saying if I WANT TO PLAY THE FILE I HAVE TO INSTALL THE CODECS MYSELF AND WMV WILL SIT LIKE A STONE DOING NOTHING INTELLIGENT LIKE FINDING THE CODECS ITSELF?
