This is very tricky. If you ask a girl for her number too soon, then she may not be comfortable enough with you to give it. But if you wait too long, then will you will almost inevitably get stuck in the friend zone. Since the latter seems to be your problem, I would suggest making the move to ask for the girl's number soon (within a week or two) after becoming acquainted with her. Also, try flirting a little bit. :) Tell her that her hair looks pretty, or that you like your earrings/necklace/bracelet etc. Girls love compliments and it gets your interest in her across with minimal risk on your part. Pay extra attention to her - it's better to be a bit too obvious than a bit too subtle. Warning: Don't make the compliments too sexual, or she might think that you're a pig.
